How to resize an image without ruining it

Enter your target width in pixels, drop in the images, and download. The tool scales each photo down proportionally — a 4000×3000 photo resized to 1280 px wide becomes exactly 1280×960, never squashed or stretched. Set the quality slider too, and the images come out both resized and compressed in one pass.

Pick the right target size

Website hero images: 1920 px covers full-width layouts on desktop, including most high-DPI screens. Blog and article images: 1280 px — wider than any content column. Email: 1280 px keeps attachments small and screens sharp. Social profiles and posts: 1080 px suits Instagram; 1200 px suits X and LinkedIn link cards. Thumbnails and avatars: the exact display size, or 2× it for retina screens.

Downscaling is safe — upscaling isn't

Scaling down re-samples existing detail, so results stay crisp. Scaling up would have to invent detail that was never captured, which is why this tool only shrinks. If something must display larger, go back to the original source file rather than enlarging a small copy.

Resize + compress = the real win

Resolution is the dominant factor in file size. A 6000 px camera photo at 5 MB, resized to 1280 px at quality 75, typically lands under 200 KB — a 95%+ reduction with zero visible difference at its display size. That's why this resizer compresses as it scales instead of treating them as separate steps.

Image Resizing FAQ

How do I resize to an exact width?+

Type the width in pixels into the "Resize width" box — every image scales to exactly that width, with height adjusted automatically to keep the original proportions. No stretching, no distortion.

Can I make an image larger?+

The tool only scales down. Enlarging beyond the original size can't add detail that was never captured — it only produces blur. Start from the highest-resolution original you have.

Does resizing reduce file size?+

Dramatically. File size scales roughly with pixel count, so halving the width quarters the size — before compression savings are even counted.

Which sizes should I use?+

Common targets: 1920 px for website heroes, 1280 px for blog content and email, 1080 px for Instagram, 800 px or less for thumbnails.
